What Level Is the ECHL?
The ECHL is AA-level professional hockey. It is the third rung of the North American ladder, two steps below the NHL, and the last tier still wired into NHL player development.
The North American hockey pyramid
- NHL, the top tier. 32 teams and the destination every player below is working toward.
- AHL, the AAA level. The NHL’s primary minor league. Each NHL club generally has one AHL affiliate holding its most advanced prospects.
- ECHL, the AA level. 30 teams, and the subject of this site. Most NHL franchises keep an ECHL affiliate here for younger players who need to play rather than sit.
- SPHL and FPHL, below the affiliated system. Independent professional leagues. Players sign with the club directly instead of being assigned by an NHL organization.
Why the ECHL is the cutoff that matters
The line worth understanding is not AA versus AAA. It is affiliation. The NHL, AHL and ECHL are linked by a player transfer system, so an organization can move a player down for minutes or recall him for a need. The SPHL and FPHL sit outside that system. That makes the ECHL the lowest level at which a player is still inside an NHL club’s development chain, which is why call-ups and assignments are followed so closely here.
How players move through it
- Coming in. Out of NCAA hockey, Canadian major junior, U SPORTS or Europe, usually in a player’s early twenties.
- Moving up. A strong ECHL run earns an AHL call-up. Sustained AHL play is what puts an NHL contract in reach.
- Moving down. AHL players are assigned to the ECHL to get regular minutes instead of scratching, and goaltenders in particular move up and down often.
- Staying. Plenty of players build long careers at this level, and the league’s veteran rules shape how many of them a roster can carry.
Frequently asked questions
What level is the ECHL?
The ECHL is AA-level professional hockey and the third tier of the North American system. Only the NHL and the AHL sit above it. It is the lowest of the three leagues formally tied into NHL player development, which is what separates it from the independent leagues below.
Is the ECHL professional hockey?
Yes. ECHL players are paid professionals under contract, not amateurs or semi-professionals. The league is recognized by the NHL as a development league, and most NHL franchises maintain an ECHL affiliate alongside their AHL club.
What does AA mean in hockey?
AA and AAA are tier labels borrowed from minor-league baseball. The AHL is the AAA level, one step from the NHL, and the ECHL is the AA level below it. The labels describe how close a league sits to the top flight rather than anything about the rules of play.
What leagues are below the ECHL?
The SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League) and the FPHL (Federal Prospects Hockey League) both operate below the ECHL. Neither is part of the NHL affiliation structure, so players there are signed directly by their clubs rather than assigned by an NHL organization.
Is the ECHL below the AHL?
Yes. The AHL is one tier higher. An NHL organization typically assigns its most advanced prospects to its AHL club and sends younger or less established players to its ECHL affiliate for playing time. Movement in both directions happens constantly during the season.
Can an ECHL player reach the NHL?
Yes, and it happens every season. The normal route is an ECHL player earning a call-up to the AHL, performing there, and then being recalled to the NHL. Direct ECHL-to-NHL recalls are rare but not unheard of, usually when an organization is dealing with several injuries at once.
Where do ECHL players come from?
Most arrive from NCAA college programs, Canadian major junior (the OHL, WHL and QMJHL), U SPORTS, or European leagues. Others are AHL players assigned down for regular minutes, and some are veterans who have built long careers at this level.
How does the ECHL compare to junior hockey?
Junior leagues such as the OHL, WHL, QMJHL and USHL are development leagues for players who are typically under 21 and, in most cases, unpaid or on a stipend. The ECHL is professional hockey played by adults for a salary, so it sits above junior in both age and standard of play.
