About ECHL attendance

What is the average attendance for an ECHL game?

Average ECHL attendance is tracked here game by game once the season starts. Crowds vary widely by market, with the strongest drawing well over 8,000 a night and smaller markets closer to 3,000. Weekend and holiday dates pull far bigger crowds than midweek games.

Which ECHL team has the highest attendance?

The table above ranks every team by average home crowd and refreshes daily once games are played. Fort Wayne, Toledo, Florida and Cincinnati have historically been among the league's strongest draws.

How is ECHL attendance measured?

Attendance figures are announced crowds reported by the home club, which count tickets distributed rather than people who came through the turnstiles. That means comped and unused tickets are included, so an announced figure is usually a little higher than the number of fans actually in the building. Every league in North American hockey reports this way, so the numbers stay comparable between clubs.

What counts as a sellout?

A game is counted as a sellout here when the announced crowd meets or exceeds the listed capacity of the arena. Because announced figures can exceed a fixed capacity when standing room is sold, some sellouts show above 100 percent of capacity.

Why do capacity percentages look strange for some teams?

Because a few ECHL clubs play in buildings much larger than the league norm, or in arenas configured for another sport or for concerts. Listed capacity is the building's overall figure rather than the seats actually opened for hockey, so a team can look like it is filling a small share of its arena while still drawing a healthy crowd. Compare the average attendance column, not just the capacity percentage.

Does this include playoff games?

Regular-season and Kelly Cup playoff attendance are tracked separately. Use the Season and Playoffs toggle above to switch between them. Playoff crowds are generally larger, so mixing the two would inflate a team's regular-season average.

How does ECHL attendance compare to the AHL and NHL?

It sits below both, which follows from the size of the markets involved. NHL buildings hold roughly 17,000 to 20,000 and are routinely close to full, AHL crowds are typically mid-sized, and ECHL clubs play in smaller arenas in smaller cities. A strong ECHL market can nonetheless out-draw a weak AHL one, so the tiers overlap at the edges.

Where does this attendance data come from?

Figures come from the official box score of each ECHL game and are refreshed daily through the season. Games with no reported figure are left out of the averages rather than counted as zero.
